I've just finished reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Wow, what a book. I bought this totally on a whim - I had a voucher for the US Amazon site and it was burning a whole in my inbox. The book just happened to be the first thing I saw (when I'd browsed through to the Scifi section). I'm glad I bought it. Weighing in at almost 1000 pages its one hell of a weighty tome.
It took me quite a while to get into it. The maths didn't bother me too much (not that I totally understood it - just the principles). It was the sheer weight of characters that made it so hard going. However after a while, maybe 6-7 chapters, things started to click in to place and it became a real page turner.
If your looking for a story (about cracking codes) that goes beyond Bletchley Park and Enigma then this is it. Set in the present day and World War II it really immerses you in the world of gold dealing and cryptography. posted at 6:43 PM by Carlton | permalink

Man Utd v Arsenal, the aftermath. The FA are taking action as eight are charged after bust-up. The accusations against Keown: "One charge of violent behaviour 'for striking van Nistelrooy on the back of the head following the final whistle'. One charge of improper conduct for 'confronting Van Nistelrooy following the penalty miss'." I've long thought that Keown is a vicious player, that constantly gets away with totally OTT behaviour on the pitch. I've lost count the amount of times he has used every means to intimidate his rivals. The FA are seriously considering banning players from taking their handbags onto the pitch.

Many will think the Italians a little harsh with their new legislation. Italy puts corgis on dangerous dogs list. The thought of Corgis being a danger makes me laugh. On the other hand, having plucked my 15 month old son from the jaws of a Jack Russell the other week, I'm all for tougher controls. However I'm not about to wade through this book to find out if it is him or not.
