'Cleaned up' Five swaps sex for science. Luckily I don't get Channel 5 on my TV because I live in a valley. I don't think that science will persuade that many people to change their opinion about the quality of the station. Royal gaffes are reasonably common place these days. However the Duke of Edinburgh is not the culprit this time. Prince Harry paints his way into outback row. His work has been described as: "At best quaint but misinformed, at worst it's really quite regrettable."
I will reluctantly jump to his defence (I'm not much of a royalist). There are not many 18 year old artists out there that will take into account the full cultural implications of including iconography in their work. Its only because he is who he is that this stink has arisen - if Damien Hirst decided to do the same no-one would bat an eyelid. posted at 12:57 PM by Carlton | permalink

Yes I may find her to be one of the finest womanly creations known to man, but when Agelina Jolie says things like 'I thought I had killed someone', you've got to wonder. I think I'll be sticking to the real world! Anyway, my wife's far better.
NB I've no idea why ananova have included some z-list celebrity picture in this story. The gratuitous bum-shot should get Sun readers excited.
As for the film, Tomb Raider II, that Agelina's currently promoting I'm really not expecting it to be any good. Obviously I'll get the DVD though! :-P posted at 9:18 AM by Carlton | permalink

More of the Mary Rose may have been discovered. I'm fairly certain they won't let Tony Robinson dive down to the wreck for the Time Team. Talking of historical shows, Griff Rhys Jones is back on TV in Restoration, a series along the lines of Pop Idol et al where the viewers decide the fate of national crumbling landmarks. It has to be said that Griff is looking rather more dishevelled than when he appeared in the Vauxhall ads. I was also amused by his over enthusiasm upon a visit to an old corset factory - he got very hot under the collar with a corset expert. posted at 8:34 AM by Carlton | permalink

The BBC are scratching their artistic chins over the alternative endings to 28 Days Later. There is an argument made that giving the audience a choice lessens the artistic value of a film. Personally, I've always shied away from watching extra bits or alternative edits. Though I can imagine many instances where the studio bigwigs demand an uplifting ending whereas the director would prefer to show a darker one. I'm going to have to sit on the fence with this one. Although I prefer films to be left well alone I can see the value of releasing an edit which more closely matches the directors vision (as long as this is in fact the directors vision and not just the addition of some cutting-room-floor-sweepings to rejuvenate flagging sales). posted at 9:11 AM by Carlton | permalink

This is the Guardian's take on Bill Thompson's column (which I commented on in a previous post below). I have to admit that there have been several times when I've found myself shaking my head at the aloofness of Bills scribblings. All over for blogs? Bill Thompson has obviously slumped into a depression at the lack of vital diversity in the blogosphere. Every year or so I get the same feeling when I look at my music collection. I tend to think that all new bands are rubbish, that my cd collection is dire and that music is dead. And then a month or so later I've a raft of new music sitting on my shelves and I'm daydreaming about picking up my drumsticks again. Obviously as a drummer for a bad covers band and not for the dizzy heights of "the band that shall remain nameless but for which I played for many moons ago".
I suspect Bill to be right up to a certain point. Yes there is a load of crap out there (including here) but there are some nuggets of goodness in amongst it all. Which is why my blogroll is so short. posted at 11:13 AM by Carlton | permalink

Today we went on a family outing to Bristol to the Balloon Fiesta. Literally melted for a few hours wandering round the stalls and fair but saw none of the balloons. Only the Hibberts could pull such a stunt. To be fair we left early due to my son and heavily pregnant wife wilting in the heat. The Hot Air Balloons were set to take to the skies at dusk. Maybe next year we'll get our act together and properly prepare for the event.
Whilst we were there we took an amble around the "Craft Fair". Good god, does the world need half of the tat that you find at these things? I did however find several artists that had decided to recreate images that we are all familiar with in their own style. Step forward the Marquetry stall owner that recreated a rich set of Greetings cards in small laminates of wood. Step forward also, the guy who was selling prints of Athena style illustrations that bore more influence from 80's Playboy than real life life-models. Can you tell me why its necessary to draw images of women sucking strawberries whilst being blissfully unaware of the cream running down their neck? I possibly spent too much time analysing this and moved swiftly on to the next stall - a guy with a PC and a digital camera. For a few quid you could immortalise yourself on a plastic plaque baring your preferred Football teams colours. Class! The award for best stall however goes to the seller of the wooden stools lovingly carved with the face of Bart Simpson. Bite Me! Indeed. posted at 8:55 PM by Carlton | permalink

United accept Chelsea's £15m Veron bid. Its beginning to look like Chelsea are just going to buy every player in the Premiership. I guess that means they'll win the league unless they go the way of previous high-spending clubs like Blackburn, Middlesboro and Newcastle. I especially remember Blackburns attempt to buy their way to the top to only see themselves relegated a couple of seasons later.
