WPT Poker magazine issue 28

WPT mag cover thumbnailI've been so snowed under recently that I've been unable to update you on our latest issues. Well let me fix it by pointing out our latest corker of an issue. Cover star Liv Boeree kindly gave up some of her hectic schedule to do an exclusive photoshoot for us. The results were great as you can see. We recently went to a recording session of a Pokerstars televised event. We had a bundle of these copies with us and they barely saw the light of day before many interested parties whisked them away for closer inspection. So get one while you can. Inside we profile her career as well as get her to interview Andy Black.
In this issue you'll find articles on:

Dash down to WHSmith right now.
Illustration wise, John Bradley provides the artwork for backstreet poker feature.

WPT Poker magazine issue 24

WPT mag cover thumbnail
Happy New Year to all you Poker and Design fans. Here's the latest issue that you can pick up from WHSmiths or from the Future Mag store. This issue has Roland De Wolfe brooding moodily on the cover - the shot was taken during last years WSOPE in London. He gets good coverage in the mag as well with mentions in a number of features, the best of which is the Pro on Pro interview he takes part in with Barny Boatman. Arguably two of the best players on the UK scene. Other articles of note...

Illustrators in this issue are Sam Gilbey and Chris Stocker.

Introducing Cormac Jordan

Cormac Jordan imageIn the blog post below you'll notice a reference to Cormac as a contributor to the latest issue. Well he's an old friend from way back. He also happens to be a fine arts trained designer who can turn his hand to using the old crayons. The thumbnail shown here is just a taster of the finished artwork that appeared in the mag, in all he put together two images for me. This link sends you to his design portfolio on Flickr, but if I nag him enough I'm sure he'll put together a folder of his illustrations up there too. Apart from these contributions Cormac is my resident freelance designer, putting his Indesign skillz to good use on WPT every month - I think I'll have to let him break out the crayons more regularly.

WPT Poker mag: Issue 22

WPT mag cover thumbnailVegas came to London recently for the WSOPE and we took the opportunity to bag an interview with Phil Hellmuth (whilst hobnobbing at the Savoy). We asked him about how he felt winning his eleventh bracelet. Also in town was Annette15, demon online player - she went on to win the London event right after we set our photographer loose on her! Apart from all of this we have the following in the latest issue...

WPT Poker mag: Issue 21

WPT mag cover thumbnailDavid Williams takes a bow on our latest cover. We managed to track him down in Vegas for a photoshoot. He came well prepared - he had visited his jeweller beforehand and appeared with boxes containing $500,000 worth of bling. After turning the lights down a notch we bagged this great cover image. He'll be pleased to hear that we also feature his mum - she beat him in the WSOP!
Get the mag to hear how David turned from a Magic The Gathering player into a pro poker star. Also this issue...

James May - Autocar

When you've been working in publishing as long as I have you get to hear about a lot of stories about disgruntled employees getting their own back. The best is the "hidden message using the first letter of each story". Its one of those stories that you think are great but never actually get the chance of seeing. Well here's what Top Gear presenter James May did whilst working for Autocar magazine quite a few years ago. Absolute class. You'd never get me doing anything like this - oh no!

WPT Poker mag: Issue 17

WPT mag cover thumbnailSlightly later in the month than I'd like - here's my ad for the day job: Rake it in this issue with our cover star Humberto Brenes. He's the cheeky chappy that brings big tournaments to life with his outlandish cries of "I'm all-in!". Also the cover has some minor poker celebrity in the form of jail-bound Paris Hilton. She featured in the WPT Celebrity Invitational in LA and we have all the highlights.

My designs

Ratpack thumbnailI've started to populate my Flickr account with some design work from the last decade. Its mainly from my work on Future magazines. I have added descriptions to all of them just yet - that takes an age. Anyway, feel free to have a nose through them all. There's quite a few layouts that feature some images from top class illustrators - Insect, Twelveten, Richard May, Identikal to name but a few.

World Poker Tour mag: Issue 12

WPT mag cover thumbnailWith a pre-Christmas trip to Vegas and the festive season all rolling into one, I've been a bit lax on promoting our latest issue. So here it is...
Incidentally my trip to the US was to bag a bunch of poker professionals during the Five Diamond Poker tournament. We had photoshoots with about a dozen top players, Doyle Brunson, David Williams, and Liz Lieu amongst them. It was a great experience, and the shots will feature as covers in the coming months.
Features in this bulging issue include:

Illustrators appearing in this issue are Miles Cole, and Kev Speck. Go here to buy it...

World Poker Tour mag: Issue 11

WPT mag cover thumbnailA trip to Cardiff doesn't normally fill me with joy, so when Ian, my editor, suggested a photoshoot there I didn't exactly whoop for joy. However it was to meet up with a guy called Antonio Esfandiari. He met us whilst filming a TV event and was very willing to entertain our ideas for the shoot. Anyway our photographer, Jesse Wilde, bagged a whole sackload of shots for us to work with. Once I'd chosen the winning shot I got Chris Stocker on the case to do the image manipulations I wanted to make. He added the magical element to what became this months front cover image. I'm really pleased with the result (and so is Antonio!). It's a really great package this issue.
Features include:

Illustrators appearing in this issue are Aaron Minier, Tom Hughes and little old me. Go here to buy it...

It's a heavenly read!

.net mag February 2006 edition - Heaven and HellOn sale from now is the latest edition of .net. This issue shows you the good and the bad side of the net. For the good we have a feature listing 25 heavenly web design tools (and all free), plus an article on how to write a winning design brief. On the darkside of the net we question web standards, "Is usability killing creativity?". Also we take a look at the evil "healthcare" sites that peddle dodgy remedies to the gullible and unwary.

Artists providing illustrations this issue are: Gavin Strange, Humandescent, Tom Hughes, Jan Martin and AkA. Gavin provided the excellent cover image - I'll make a separate post about this guy later...
