I've been so snowed under recently that I've been unable to update you on our latest issues. Well let me fix it by pointing out our latest corker of an issue. Cover star Liv Boeree kindly gave up some of her hectic schedule to do an exclusive photoshoot for us. The results were great as you can see. We recently went to a recording session of a Pokerstars televised event. We had a bundle of these copies with us and they barely saw the light of day before many interested parties whisked them away for closer inspection. So get one while you can. Inside we profile her career as well as get her to interview Andy Black.Labels: illustration, magazine, poker

A certain old contributor of mine pointed me in the direction of a new cartoonist by the name of Nick Girls. Great portfolio for a relatively new artist but I'm sure we'll be seeing much more of him in the future. Check out his blog too for more up to date imagery skills.Labels: blog, illustration

In the blog post below you'll notice a reference to Cormac as a contributor to the latest issue. Well he's an old friend from way back. He also happens to be a fine arts trained designer who can turn his hand to using the old crayons. The thumbnail shown here is just a taster of the finished artwork that appeared in the mag, in all he put together two images for me. This link sends you to his design portfolio on Flickr, but if I nag him enough I'm sure he'll put together a folder of his illustrations up there too. Apart from these contributions Cormac is my resident freelance designer, putting his Indesign skillz to good use on WPT every month - I think I'll have to let him break out the crayons more regularly.Labels: design, illustration, magazine

Vegas came to London recently for the WSOPE and we took the opportunity to bag an interview with Phil Hellmuth (whilst hobnobbing at the Savoy). We asked him about how he felt winning his eleventh bracelet. Also in town was Annette15, demon online player - she went on to win the London event right after we set our photographer loose on her! Apart from all of this we have the following in the latest issue...Labels: illustration, magazine, poker

David Williams takes a bow on our latest cover. We managed to track him down in Vegas for a photoshoot. He came well prepared - he had visited his jeweller beforehand and appeared with boxes containing $500,000 worth of bling. After turning the lights down a notch we bagged this great cover image. He'll be pleased to hear that we also feature his mum - she beat him in the WSOP!Labels: illustration, magazine, poker

Tom Hughes has started up a new website to sell prints of his new illustration style. His new art comes from the urban inspiration that is Bristol. Home to concrete vistas and tag happy graffiti artists - like Banksy. You might spot some pigeons in the mix.Labels: illustration

David Apatoff is obviously someone with a great wealth of knowledge about illustration in the previous century. Luckily he has gifting an awful lot of that knowledge to us through his blog. It has been picked up as one of Blogger's 'Blogs of Note' and is undoubtedly enjoying a peak in traffic. It's great to see the skills of latter day artists - they leave a lot of todays illustrators in the dust. It's much in the same vein as Today's Inspiration and is a welcome addition to my blogroll.Labels: blog, comics, illustration

Just found this blog of minkee's work. Troble is there's no "about me..." info in there, so I've no idea who or what Minkee is! There are a lot of great images on there - mainly sketches, roughs and experiments. This is one blog to keep an eye on. If you're watching Minkee - post a bio.Labels: illustration

It's great to see someone you've commissioned in the past going on to great things. Gavin is a guy who always seems so enthusiastic about being creative - puts an old cynic like me to shame. You only have to dip in to his blog for a short time to see how much energy/projects/geekery he possesses. Well the news that he couldn't quite keep to himself is that he landed himself a spot on the Apple Pro site. Here's to the unstoppable conveyorbelt of ideas that is Jam Factory! Well done Gavin. Here's someone that uses pen and paper for illustration, a rare breed these days. Diggy's illustrations have a great fluidity to them because of this approach. The black lines and sombre palette give these images a certain melancholic feel but that's not to be discouraged. He also has a blog where things seem to be a touch more colourful. He's currently studying on a graphics degree in Falmouth, but I get a sense that illustration is where his heart is at! One to watch I think.Labels: illustration

Sam Gilbey is, quite rightly, rather chuffed with his latest creation. The thumbnail image you see here is a small part of a much larger montage he has created for the film "Hot Fuzz". Having previously painted an image of "Shaun of the Dead", Sam was invited by the films director to create a new piece for his latest blockbuster. Click through to his site to see a step by step process of how he created his masterpiece.Labels: illustration

All the big stars of high stakes american games, along with the best of our own home grown scene. This comic is great. Created by someone using the name "Bruised Blood", you can usually find his latest strips posted to B3ta. This episode is particularly funny. I thankfully, am unafflicted by this phenomenom! Beware though, these strips can often send shivers up the spine.Labels: comics, funny, illustration

Scott is a Canadian based illustrator with a great style. I really like his "curvy into pointy" linear artwork. There are a fair few illustrators out there that fall into this laidback "cocktail lounge" style but Scott works it well and with an added twist of humour and dynamism. Maybe that comes from his past as a hopeful animator. His client list is pretty impressive too. Well worth a visit.Labels: illustration

Slightly later in the month than I'd like - here's my ad for the day job: Rake it in this issue with our cover star Humberto Brenes. He's the cheeky chappy that brings big tournaments to life with his outlandish cries of "I'm all-in!". Also the cover has some minor poker celebrity in the form of jail-bound Paris Hilton. She featured in the WPT Celebrity Invitational in LA and we have all the highlights.Labels: illustration, magazine, poker

Scouting Drawn lead me to find a post about this chap. Its a great blog where Michael is attempting the often difficult task of posting a drawing every day. I don't think I'll ever set myself that task. Anyway, Michael's drawings are no quick scribble thrown on a scanner, they all contain some play on the title of the piece - the one pictured here is called "The Short Straw".Labels: illustration

Hoorah. Just to let you know it sold for GBP68 - considering how late in the day I created it, that's not a bad haul for charity. Thanks to all who took part. I'm considering doing more signed celebrity prints, if you've got any requests let me know.Labels: charity, Comic Relief, illustration, personal, Red Nose Day

I've produced an illustration of one of the main Red Nose Day presenters, Lenny Henry. I've printed this out as an A2 poster. I'll be listing it on ebay next week but I wanted to let people know about it beforehand. I'll post a link to the auction once it goes live. At the moment it is in the hands of his agent so that I can get it signed by the good man himself. I'll also be listing an auction in which I'll be offering custom illustrations in the same style to whoever wants one. So if you've got a photo of a favourite loved one, fluffy pet, or jar of pickles that you want translated into the medium of large dots on photo-quality paper, get bidding! After all, it's all for charity.Labels: charity, illustration, personal

I've just started dipping my toe into illustrationmundo (not sure why I've not done this before). I quite like the random option you can click in the illustrator database. Here's the first fruit of my meanderings on the site, Superoboturbo. The site is the portfolio of Jordy van den Nieuwendijk who is based in the Netherlands. Great vectors! It helps that anything robot related usually gets my attention, baaaaaa.Labels: illustration

I've started to populate my Flickr account with some design work from the last decade. Its mainly from my work on Future magazines. I have added descriptions to all of them just yet - that takes an age. Anyway, feel free to have a nose through them all. There's quite a few layouts that feature some images from top class illustrators - Insect, Twelveten, Richard May, Identikal to name but a few.Labels: design, illustration, magazine, personal

A little while back I was trying to hunt down Kev Speck for a commission I had lined up for him. His site was down and I was unsure my contact details for him were up to date. So after a swift google I tracked him down to this site - The Clarabellas. Lo and behold I found that there were a few other familiar faces amongst the collective: Nigel Dennis and McFaul. I had commissioned these before with great results. Anyway I finally got in touch with Kev and the job was soon in the bag. Anyway, it looks like I've found a rich vein at the claras. I'm really liking Catalina Estrada's work (as shown in the thumbnail left).Labels: illustration

Not long ago I got the book Loads More Lies to Tell Small Kids as a present. It's great fun, well drawn, with plenty of great insights into what its like to be a parent. I found myself immediately giving my sons slightly untrue answers to their persistent questions after reading this. They swallowed them up wholesale! The author Andy Riley gets top marks.Labels: books, funny, illustration

I found this community of student artists on myspace and swiftly "added" them. The founders are people I've been aware of for a while and the project seemed like a pretty fine idea. They are Tom Judd and James Chambers. Tom is an illustrator/animator whom I've seen in various places including Computer Arts - in fact he seems so familiar I've got a feeling I may have used him at some time. James is a graphic/web designer. Anyway, I love places like 5oup because they are full of new faces with new ideas and styles. Whenever I find myself pouring through books like Contact for the bazillionth time its great to rummage through a site like 5oup. You might not always come up with the person you want to commission, but you always find yourself coming up with something new.
