The word is getting around about Patterns for Colouring and its getting featured on other sites like Creative Boom (pictured), Parent Dish (which is where I found the link to Marshall Alexander, below) and even Holy Moly - quite a broad audience footprint there! I've also seen it mentioned on a few parenting forums and moneysavingexpert.com. Design sites that have featured it include ColourLovers and Ideafixa. If you have any ideas of what sites I should target please let me know.Labels: art, blog, craft, design, illustration, pattern, personal

I found this little gem of a site on a blog that also mentioned my pattern site (more of that in the next post...). Tying in nicely with the Speakerdog post this is another papercraft site and what a lovely piece of work it is too. With all of these treats you'll be spoiling us (ambassador). I especially like the one pictured, "Ape, not a monkey".Labels: craft, design, illustration

I'm loving what Ben the Illustrator has done with his speakerdog creation. I've been spotting it appear in all sorts of places over the last few years. Its a great little brand he has created, but I was unaware that he was allowing other creatives to have fun with it too. Its now a paper toy and series 6 has a whole host of talent customising the little fella. So get your PVA and scissors ready and get busy. The 'dog shown is by Jamie Smart.Labels: blog, craft, design, illustration

Its update time in the land of patterns. My free CC pattern site now has over 100 high resolution images. I'm getting some great feedback from sites like Geekdad, Colourlovers, and Ideafixa who have all linked to the pattern blog recently. It would be great to spread the word even further so that children and adults can all get experimenting and learning about colour.Labels: art, blog, design, illustration, pattern, personal

My pattern blog is building up quite a collection of downloadable images. I've just uploaded the 75th pattern. They are all free for you to use (as long as you abide by the Creative Commons license on the site). All of the patterns are A4 in size and are aimed at kids to print out and colour in. I'm aiming to hit the 100 image mark soon.Labels: design, illustration, pattern, personal

Design Week has a fascinating article about how creatives use their sketchbooks. I tend to use scraps of paper whenever the urge to doodle or think hits me. I do have sketchbooks but they tend to be where I store these odds and ends. The books do get quite padded by this extra paper. I have a more formal leather pocket sketchbook, but its just a little bit too posh and small to do any really messy rumination.Labels: art, books, design, illustration

The most eagerly awaited website launch of them all... Welcome to David Lyttleton's Website! David has been a longstanding contributor to the various mags I've produced. An excellent illustrator bursting with ideas. Let the stampede begin.Labels: design, illustration

I've just uploaded the fortieth free pattern to my other blog. All of the patterns on that site are for downloading, printing out and colouring in. I'm aiming to have 100 patterns uploaded soon, I just have to get around to creating them! The patterns are mostly based on simple geometric shapes but I may branch out into more figurative areas at some point. Remember all of the patterns are protected by a Creative Customs license. Patterns for colouring...Labels: art, blog, design, illustration, pattern, personal

This award looks pretty interesting - Beck's Canvas. They are giving four artists the chance to put their artwork on Beck's bottle labels in August. They've helped the careers of Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin (more's the pity) and Jake & Dinos Chapman in the past. Having your work appear on 27 million bottles of beer can't be too shabby!

The last few months have been very busy for me. Firstly I had to do a redesign of my magazine, WPT Poker. My colleagues and I have produced a more focussed product aimed at the established poker playing community. We've added far more input from professional players, giving the reader far more chance to immerse themselves in the practice and atmosphere of cardroom mentality.
The other project that has kept me up late is a new pattern site. Its for all those (kids through to pensioners!) who love to colour in abstract patterns. I used to love spending hours as a young'un filling in bookloads of these kind of designs. I did a websearch but found nothing beyond a few ancient sites with awful images on them. So I decided to create my own patterns for an eager audience to download, print and start colouring in. Its a great activity for when the weather is chucking stair-rods at the world.Labels: art, blog, design, illustration, magazine, poker

Well it could be a Kirkism or it could be this. But then, maybe it has something to do with this instead. Hmm?Labels: design, funny, illustration

In the blog post below you'll notice a reference to Cormac as a contributor to the latest issue. Well he's an old friend from way back. He also happens to be a fine arts trained designer who can turn his hand to using the old crayons. The thumbnail shown here is just a taster of the finished artwork that appeared in the mag, in all he put together two images for me. This link sends you to his design portfolio on Flickr, but if I nag him enough I'm sure he'll put together a folder of his illustrations up there too. Apart from these contributions Cormac is my resident freelance designer, putting his Indesign skillz to good use on WPT every month - I think I'll have to let him break out the crayons more regularly.Labels: design, illustration, magazine

Well, just smoke actually. Here's a neat little tutorial for those stumped on how to generate a wispy smoke effect using Illustrator and Photoshop from PSDTuts.Labels: blog, design, illustration, photoshop

Not knowing much about German, I'm taking a bit of a stab at understanding this page on Slanted. Type the sky is a university project by Lisa Reinerman. It involves a photography/typography project where she's basically looked up and shot the skyline to make out letterforms. I've had to rely on a babelfish translation to understand the text, but I think that photoshop hasn't played too big a part in forming these. It's very effective and the packaging she's produced for the piece looks great.Labels: design, photography, typography

It's great to see someone you've commissioned in the past going on to great things. Gavin is a guy who always seems so enthusiastic about being creative - puts an old cynic like me to shame. You only have to dip in to his blog for a short time to see how much energy/projects/geekery he possesses. Well the news that he couldn't quite keep to himself is that he landed himself a spot on the Apple Pro site. Here's to the unstoppable conveyorbelt of ideas that is Jam Factory! Well done Gavin. This site is a great resource for any screen jockey. Veerle Pieter is mainly a web designer with a background in graphic design and illustration. I'm linking to her Photoshop and Illustrator tutorials as they are a great resource, but you should make time to browse the other topics available.Labels: design, illustration

Today has seen a fairly large backlash about the launch of the new London 2012 brand identity, reputed to have cost GBP400,000. To me it looks like an old Ivan Lendl Adidas shirt gone wrong. It would also be a good design if we ever won and had to host the eurovision song contest. Don't even get me started on the typography! *rant* See it in all its glory here. The best bit of today was witnessing Dame Kelly Holmes trying unsuccessfully to keep a straight face on the BBC Breakfast show whilst attempting to describe the logo as dynamic and aspirational.Labels: design

I've started to populate my Flickr account with some design work from the last decade. Its mainly from my work on Future magazines. I have added descriptions to all of them just yet - that takes an age. Anyway, feel free to have a nose through them all. There's quite a few layouts that feature some images from top class illustrators - Insect, Twelveten, Richard May, Identikal to name but a few.Labels: design, illustration, magazine, personal
