Patterns: Call for entries

patterns for colouring icon

My side project Patterns for Colouring has started to feature patterns from specially invited illustrators and designers. So far Ben the Illustrator, Matt Lyon and David Lyttleton have been added to the library, with more to come. I think the concept is working really well and would like to extend the invitation to the wider creative community. If you feel you'd like to produce colouring pages for children then please check out the sites submission page.

5 illustrators

As a result of being side lined by other things I've neglected to post links to illustrators that have either contacted me or I've found. This is to redress the situation...

ape on the moonAlex Mathers contacted me recently after I found him on twitter. Thankfully I'd already earmarked him for inclusion in the blog. Ape on the Moon is another illustration blog, much like this one, looking for fresh talent to post about. Alex is also rather talented too, which helps!

eye eyeScott Nellis is a Brighton based graduate that also emailed me. I was struck by his powerful pen and ink image work. The illustrations are wonderfully twisted and Scott should be inundated with commissions in my opinion.

dragonAssim Hetun also has an eye for the bizarre and capturing it in black and white. Luckily he doesn't limit himself to monotones. However his Escher inspired repeating pattern obviously caught my attention. Its good to see that he also featured in Computer Arts 2007 graduate showcase.

dragonJonathan Edwards is a hardworking illustrator that has been plying his trade since 1993. Published in Deadline (my favourite read of the era) he went on to appear regularly in The Guardian. Now he's set up a collaborative blog dedicated to illustration and, another love of mine, Serge Gainsbourg - Draw Serge!. Bliss. I might have to have a stab at a Serge myself - watch this space!

StingNiki Lopez is next on the list if only for this great image of Sting and The Police. Hailing from Puerto Rico, Niki has a great portfolio and also runs her own blog. She draws very interesting noses, and should probably tackle Serge too. She has a variety of styles but this one (left) reminds me of Aaron Minier's work (another favourite of mine).

Well that wraps up my list, I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know if you think I should mention anybody else in future posts. This post brought to you by the power of ManFlu!

Patterns: Call for entries

Creative Boom logoThe word is getting around about Patterns for Colouring and its getting featured on other sites like Creative Boom (pictured), Parent Dish (which is where I found the link to Marshall Alexander, below) and even Holy Moly - quite a broad audience footprint there! I've also seen it mentioned on a few parenting forums and moneysavingexpert.com. Design sites that have featured it include ColourLovers and Ideafixa. If you have any ideas of what sites I should target please let me know.
I'm currently planning to add guest-generated patterns by leading designers/illustrators to the growing library. I've had some excellent feedback so far. If you are a talented creative and think you should be included in this project, get in touch and I'll give you more details.

Speakerdog series 6

speakerdogI'm loving what Ben the Illustrator has done with his speakerdog creation. I've been spotting it appear in all sorts of places over the last few years. Its a great little brand he has created, but I was unaware that he was allowing other creatives to have fun with it too. Its now a paper toy and series 6 has a whole host of talent customising the little fella. So get your PVA and scissors ready and get busy. The 'dog shown is by Jamie Smart.

100+ free colouring patterns

Yay Boo YayIts update time in the land of patterns. My free CC pattern site now has over 100 high resolution images. I'm getting some great feedback from sites like Geekdad, Colourlovers, and Ideafixa who have all linked to the pattern blog recently. It would be great to spread the word even further so that children and adults can all get experimenting and learning about colour.

40 free patterns

star patternI've just uploaded the fortieth free pattern to my other blog. All of the patterns on that site are for downloading, printing out and colouring in. I'm aiming to have 100 patterns uploaded soon, I just have to get around to creating them! The patterns are mostly based on simple geometric shapes but I may branch out into more figurative areas at some point. Remember all of the patterns are protected by a Creative Customs license. Patterns for colouring...

New look mag, brand new website

WPT Poker issue 31 thumbnailThe last few months have been very busy for me. Firstly I had to do a redesign of my magazine, WPT Poker. My colleagues and I have produced a more focussed product aimed at the established poker playing community. We've added far more input from professional players, giving the reader far more chance to immerse themselves in the practice and atmosphere of cardroom mentality.
The look of the magazine is now more sophisticated, with a whole raft of new features. We've given the cover a matt finish which make the whole package very tactile. New articles include: Action, our front news/analysis section; New regular columnists, Doyle Brunson, Antonio Esfandiairi and Jim Mcshane; Floor, tales from tournament directors; Every Question Answered, your chance to put your questions to a poker pro; Real Life, a stars chance to share a life changing event; and many more.
The cover star this issue is Neil Channing, telling us about his big win in the Irish Open and his preparation for the World Series.
Illustrators in this issue are new contributors Chris Keegan and Tim Marrs.
If you want pick up a copy of the No.1 resource for serious players click here! On sale now.
The all new pattern siteThe other project that has kept me up late is a new pattern site. Its for all those (kids through to pensioners!) who love to colour in abstract patterns. I used to love spending hours as a young'un filling in bookloads of these kind of designs. I did a websearch but found nothing beyond a few ancient sites with awful images on them. So I decided to create my own patterns for an eager audience to download, print and start colouring in. Its a great activity for when the weather is chucking stair-rods at the world.
Check out the blog for the full list of patterns you can download. More to be added regularly.

Bond Is Back!

Diamonds are for ever thumbnailThis will be no surprise to your average Bond fan, but a new title is about to hit the stores. Michael Gillette, on his blog Pencil Squeezing, shows us his cover work for the release of Fleming's classic books. I've got a couple of old paperbacks knocking around, must dig them out.

Nick Girls

Nick Girls imageA certain old contributor of mine pointed me in the direction of a new cartoonist by the name of Nick Girls. Great portfolio for a relatively new artist but I'm sure we'll be seeing much more of him in the future. Check out his blog too for more up to date imagery skills.

So long Pixelsurgeon

Pixelsurgeon is being closed down, as the founders can no longer devote the necessary time to keep it viable. I'm sad to see it go, but can understand that with other projects they can no longer maintain the site. I've found a lot of very interesting links and leads there over the years. So to all who sailed in her/it - many thanks and good luck!

Smoke and mirrors

Smoke effect imageWell, just smoke actually. Here's a neat little tutorial for those stumped on how to generate a wispy smoke effect using Illustrator and Photoshop from PSDTuts.

Design portfolio

.net spread design

My design portfolio has finally launched. It will work as a sister site to this one and will contain a good healthy chunk of all of my design work from the last 13 years. There's quite a lot of stuff in there at the moment but I'm working on even more. Head over to the design galleries to see more. I have also started a new design blog which will run in tandem to this one, so bookmark both blogs to get the full picture.

20th century illustration

comic imageDavid Apatoff is obviously someone with a great wealth of knowledge about illustration in the previous century. Luckily he has gifting an awful lot of that knowledge to us through his blog. It has been picked up as one of Blogger's 'Blogs of Note' and is undoubtedly enjoying a peak in traffic. It's great to see the skills of latter day artists - they leave a lot of todays illustrators in the dust. It's much in the same vein as Today's Inspiration and is a welcome addition to my blogroll.
