James May - Autocar

When you've been working in publishing as long as I have you get to hear about a lot of stories about disgruntled employees getting their own back. The best is the "hidden message using the first letter of each story". Its one of those stories that you think are great but never actually get the chance of seeing. Well here's what Top Gear presenter James May did whilst working for Autocar magazine quite a few years ago. Absolute class. You'd never get me doing anything like this - oh no!

Recycling art

Bruised Blood thumbnailOver at blog the new shelton wet/dry they've got a post of some interesting photos of junk. This junk is art. Art that's been skillfully crafted (i.e. not a work by Emin in sight). The junk has been moulded into bizarre shapes, which when lit, cast eerily familiar shapes on the background. Brilliant.

A subject close to his heart

Bruised Blood thumbnailThis comic is great. Created by someone using the name "Bruised Blood", you can usually find his latest strips posted to B3ta. This episode is particularly funny. I thankfully, am unafflicted by this phenomenom! Beware though, these strips can often send shivers up the spine.

Scott Thigpen

Scott Thigpen imageScott is a Canadian based illustrator with a great style. I really like his "curvy into pointy" linear artwork. There are a fair few illustrators out there that fall into this laidback "cocktail lounge" style but Scott works it well and with an added twist of humour and dynamism. Maybe that comes from his past as a hopeful animator. His client list is pretty impressive too. Well worth a visit.
On a side note, he uses Photofront for his portfolio, which is a rather swish flash-based gallery. Its good for any of you Flickr users out there that want to integrate a professional looking image viewer into your portfolio site.

WPT Poker mag: Issue 17

WPT mag cover thumbnailSlightly later in the month than I'd like - here's my ad for the day job: Rake it in this issue with our cover star Humberto Brenes. He's the cheeky chappy that brings big tournaments to life with his outlandish cries of "I'm all-in!". Also the cover has some minor poker celebrity in the form of jail-bound Paris Hilton. She featured in the WPT Celebrity Invitational in LA and we have all the highlights.
Features to look out for in this issue are:

London 2012

London 2012 imageToday has seen a fairly large backlash about the launch of the new London 2012 brand identity, reputed to have cost GBP400,000. To me it looks like an old Ivan Lendl Adidas shirt gone wrong. It would also be a good design if we ever won and had to host the eurovision song contest. Don't even get me started on the typography! *rant* See it in all its glory here. The best bit of today was witnessing Dame Kelly Holmes trying unsuccessfully to keep a straight face on the BBC Breakfast show whilst attempting to describe the logo as dynamic and aspirational.
[edit] It looks like the blog at London 2012 isn't accepting any comments. I wonder why? Hmm. Design bible Creative Review has its say on the design instead, and you can comment there. I like their list of Pros and Cons. One of the cons being, "It looks a bit like something Neil Buchanan might have put together on Art Attack." However, I reckon that's doing Neil a bit of a disservice.

Michael Renouf

Michael Renouf imageScouting Drawn lead me to find a post about this chap. Its a great blog where Michael is attempting the often difficult task of posting a drawing every day. I don't think I'll ever set myself that task. Anyway, Michael's drawings are no quick scribble thrown on a scanner, they all contain some play on the title of the piece - the one pictured here is called "The Short Straw".

Image manipulation

Here's a job where I had to come up with an image for a feature about poker variance. Each element in this image was shot separately. This wasn't on purpose they just happened to be stock shots that I had in my library that fitted the bill. I think I've managed to piece them together fairly seamlessly. The bullet holes are an added element in Photoshop.
