Janes appeal badge

A couple of months back I read of Jane Tomlinsons continuing battle to raise funds for her appeal. Jane suffers from terminal cancer and has battled to squeeze an extra 5.5 years past the "six months left" initial diagnosis. Her latest feat is to cross America on a cycle in nine weeks. She's on her last couple of days and is in very bad shape, however she still manages to complete her schedule. Her journey ends tomorrow in New York, do your best to support her.

BBC World ad

Map thumbnailI spotted this unusual idea over on Frederik Samuel's Advertising/Design Goodness blog. It takes a little while for your eyes to adjust but soon you start to see the images made up from the borders. Clever stuff, even if the colours jar a bit. The series of illustrations was produced by Karen Minot.

Poker time

WPT Poker mag thumbnailI've been neglecting to plug my new job for a while now. I've been totally immersed in the world of poker for three issues now and about to go to print on my fourth - time is flying. The issue on sale at the moment has a great cover story which shares some great anecdotes from the top dealers on the circuit. The mag features the best photography on the WPT scene - ably supplied by Joe Giron. Joe usually takes portraits of top music acts like Linkin Park or System of a Down, so he's brought a real sense of visual quality to the poker world. I'm still featuring some great illustrators, but not as many as I used to, as this mag is more photographically oriented. In this issue you'll find illos from Anthony Robinson, Miles Cole, James Starr, and David Lyttleton. The cover image you see here was shot at Walcot Studio in Bath, by Paul O'Connor. Russell Wiltshire, our model for the day, was supplied by Gingersnap - it was a great session and we bagged a hat full of shots.

Gez Fry in Pingmag

Gez Fry thumbnailFeatured on PingMag is Manga artist Gez Fry. He produced a couple of amazing .net covers for me. In this interview he talks about how he ditched his ambition to be a diplomat in Japan to become an illustrator instead! His work is amazing - here's hoping he gets the recognition he deserves in Japan.

Photorealistic Vector Art

Bert Monroy thumbnailEvery now and then you'll find an illustration link posted to Boing Boing. This is just one: The World's Most Photorealistic Vector Art. Its a blog post that collects some of the most painstakingly constructed images I've seen. However I doubt these guys could turn images like this around on a weeks deadline! Just shows what you can do with patience and a hell of a lot of spare time.

Serge Seidlitz Gold Award

Serges mapThe AOI has published its latest awards book Images 30 in which Serge Seidlitz took top honours in the self promotion section. His combination of artwork and typography is excellent and this is a standout piece (see the thumbnail image of his USA roadmap). His site is a riot of colour and type which encourages you to forage around clicking merrily away at all of the gems. I think he's well pleased with the award, judging by the email he sent around to all his clients! He deserves it.

Get principled

principles book coverI bought a book the other day. I tend to find myself browsing the design shelves of the local Waterstones every now and then. The usual flashy offerings present themselves proclaiming to be the design of NOW but I rarely shell out for their overpriced wares. However this book, "Universal Principles of Design", fairly leapt off the shelf and begged me to take it home. Its a plain looking tome so might easily be overlooked. Having skimmed through it I can see that this is a top notch purchase and one of immense value. It contains 100 of the most important concepts of design theory from a wide range of disciplines. Though they may not all be specific to your chosen skill set, they do strengthen your overall understanding of the world around you. This is a book to reinvigorate anyone's creativity. The Amazon reviews may at first look seem suspiciously effusive but believe me they are, in fact, accurate. I'm a bit gutted that I paid full whack at Waterstones but then found it a tenner cheaper on Amazon. I'm glad I bought it though.
